Here are some tips how to stay disciplined and meet your new year resolutions.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s about that time of year when resolutions are at the forefront of our minds. A new year<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">brings renewed aspirations. Gyms are packed. Pantries are cleaned. Priorities are rearranged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Many of us are eager to make changes. To drive into the new year with fresh resolve. We vow to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">cleanse, to gain, to lose, to start, to quit . . . to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When it comes to making changes, I believe there are two types of people: Those who<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">crave change like candy, and those who avoid it like their ex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Whether you like it or not, change<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">takes work. Hard work. It requires you to start new good habits and break old bad ones. When<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifegram.org\/new-year-resolutions\/\">set a resolution<\/a>, you are essentially making a pact with yourself \u2014 a firm decision \u2014 to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">behave a certain way. Often a different and extremely uncomfortable way. Over and over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So how do you stay motivated?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s the question friends have repeatedly asked me over the years. Frankly, I never truly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">understood why they think I have the answer, nor have I ever provided inspiring insight. I don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">do anything particularly special. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">At least I didn\u2019t think I did. Until recently, when a friend<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">benevolently argued . . . \u201cbut you exercise every morning at 5 am. There is no way I could do<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">that. How do you stay motivated?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They framed the question with such awe, relinquishing their<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">own ability to execute such an impossible practice at the same time. Which made me think. How<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">do I do it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The truth is, I\u2019m not motivated at all. I have been getting up before dawn to exercise for<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">more than two decades and there isn\u2019t a single morning that I don\u2019t curse the alarm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I have a full<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">blown internal face-off that is reminiscent of two hostile teenage siblings battling over who&#8217;s turn it<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0is to take out the trash. \u201cI did it yesterday!\u201d \u201cWell, I did it the day before!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When 5 am<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">screams, I wake up demanding credit for my previous day\u2019s hard work and beg for the day off as<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">a reward. Until . . . old habits prevail and I just roll over and go. I do it, not because I am<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">motivated, I do it because I have something that I didn\u2019t realize not everybody had . . .<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">discipline.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">What I should have said to my admiring friend is that what I do, I do<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">despite being motivated. It isn\u2019t about the things we want to do, it is the things we have to do<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">because it means that much to us. Every day is day one<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Treat every day as the first day. Consider your resolution an act of performance. Give the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">same energy to it as you did the day you started. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Stage actors deliver every performance<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">as if it\u2019s the first time they\u2019ve delivered a line whether they\u2019ve said it a hundred times.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Greet each opportunity to meet your goals with the same renewed energy as day one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Know_Your_Why\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">2. Know Your Why<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">First and foremost, you need to get clear on why you have decided \u2014 no, resolved \u2014 to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">make a change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This is where motivation plays an important role in your resolution<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">because it is the reason why you started. Write down your why on an index card. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Treat it<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">like a personal mantra. Memorize it. Carry it with you. (Example: I am doing _______<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">because _______ .) But bear in mind, while motivation sets you in motion, it\u2019s discipline<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">that keeps you going. Motivation without discipline is like a dream without a plan \u2014 just<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">a wish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Budget_your_energy_cubes\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">3. Budget your energy cubes.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I once heard our limited energy described in terms of a fixed amount of daily cubes.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Imagine every day you are gifted with ten energy cubes to sustain your daily duties.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Exercise? One energy cube. Work? Four energy cubes. Errands? Two energy cubes. Call<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">your mom? All three remaining energy cubes! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Once you hit zero, you\u2019re out. The number<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">line doesn\u2019t go into negatives. You can\u2019t add something without taking something away<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">first. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So, if you are working extra hard to create a new habit or kill an old one, then you<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">must take something else off your plate that drains your energy. It\u2019s just math.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Fall_back_on_familiar_habits\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">4. Fall back on familiar habits.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When finding the discipline to stay the course with something new, it\u2019s helpful to fall<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">back on familiar habits. Tack the new habit onto something you\u2019re already doing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">(Ex: If\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">you walk the dog every morning and your goal is to stretch more, add the exercises to the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">end of your walk.) This way you will form new good habits on top of old ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_One_percent_per_day\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">5. One percent per day<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The checklist for change is daunting. Whether you resolve to read more books or write<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">one, don\u2019t think about everything that needs to be done. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A little bit over a long time<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">makes a big difference. One percent per day multiplied by 365 days in a year is life<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Give_someone_your_goal\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">6. Give someone your goal<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Accountability partners help you keep a commitment. Give your goal to someone you can<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">trust and set up a system for checking in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Once, when I set a goal to limit refined sugar, I<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">made a friend call me every night at 8 pm \u2014 the witching hour when my sweet tooth<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">kicks in. Knowing her call was coming helped me refrain from filling my bowl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">(Disclaimer: Spouses excluded as accountability partners. Nobody needs their significant<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">other to remind them to put down the tub of ice cream.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Keep_your_goals_under_control\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">7. Keep your goals under control<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Frame your goals so that the outcome is within your control. If I resolve to write fifty<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">thousand words this year, the success of that goal depends entirely on me and how I<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">prioritize my time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But if I set a goal to make five thousand dollars writing, that\u2019s up to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">the universe to say yes. (For which I\u2019m still patiently waiting.) What you give is within<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">your control, but what comes back is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_There_is_no_finish_line\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">8. There is no finish line.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I was raised with the phrase \u201cIn five years time . . . \u201c I was trained to see life in five year\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">segments. In five years, I will be ready for that job. In five years, I will be ready for that<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">move. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The problem is, five years from now is coming with or without me \u2014 or you.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When you have a vision, you must align your actions toward it at all times. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s not a five<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">year plan, it\u2019s a life plan \u2014 and there is no finish line. You can either make the changes<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">you desire or not. Either way, tick tock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Forgive_yourself\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">9. Forgive yourself<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It is highly likely you will slip up. Habits are hard to break because they are automatic,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">vaguely conscious responses. It takes intense reprogramming to change. Recognize when<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">you\u2019ve faltered, forgive yourself, and . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"10_Return_to_step_number_one\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">10. Return to step number one.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Start again. Every day is day one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Remember, you can have all the motivation to light up Christmas at the North Pole, but a<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">successful resolution coexists with willful discipline.
